Course Information
The course is primarily aimed at learners who have profound multiple learning difficulties and disabilities who are unable to access mainstream education. It can be adapted for learners with severe learning difficulties. Communication sessions are particularly aimed at those who struggle with attending outside activities
Duration of course
Courses run throughout the year. Pmld learners benefit from an extended academic year due to this client group needing the extra continuity.
Group Size
It has proven successful if the group size is kept below 8 learners. Communications sessions benefit from a maximum of 6 learners.
Length of Sessions
Each session is best kept between 60minutes and 90 minutes as these learners have problem in concentrating longer than this.
Mode of Delivery
There is a mixture of tutor-led group work and one-to-one work,
Mapping
Every activity and individual goals are mapped to the Pre-Entry Curriculum.
Evaluation
I evaluate each individual by observing their body language, actions and each small idiosyncratic gesture. I evaluate product evidence by seeing how they have related to their individual goals.
Session Activities
There are set activities to each session their aim is to develop and promote an awareness of others and the world around them through working on:
- RECOGNITION- through routine and continuity
- EYE CONTACT
- LISTENING SKILLS
- PICTURE RECOGNITION
- INTERACTION
- CONCENTRATION
- MAKATON SIGNS
- FINE MOTOR SKILLS
- CO-ORDINATION
- CO-OPERATION
- BODY AWARENESS
Learners in the long term develop a sense of belonging to the group and in general they become relaxed and participate in the activities. Obviously each week is different due to changes in medication, sickness and disturbances before they arrive at the session but these are monitored and dealt with as necessary.
If behaviour has changed then progression has been made and my learners will have reached their full potential whatever level that may be.
